2015-08-11 12:26

On August 10 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi gave an interview to Chinese media upon concluding his visits to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

Wang Yi expressed that along the whole journey, I can see that the three countries have achieved decisive victory in combating the Ebola epidemic. Liberia is the first to announce the end of the epidemic and it is believed that the other two countries will completely defeat the epidemic soon. All the three countries have focused their attention on economic and social reconstruction in the post-Ebola era, and their leaders and foreign ministers and I had detailed, specific and in-depth discussions to this end, reaching a series of consensus. The raging of Ebola in the three least developed countries in West Africa was primarily caused by poverty. If the three countries are to solve the issue at its source and prevent from the reoccurrence of Ebola, they should above all shake off poverty, realize development and revitalize themselves at an early date. During the process, they should also establish and improve public health system step by step to protect people's life and health.

Wang Yi said that to realize development, one should find the development path suitable to its national conditions. The top priority for the three countries now is to break the two major development bottlenecks of poor infrastructure and talent shortage. China has told the three countries that it is willing to bring into play its own advantages and provide necessary help. In fact, China's cooperation with Africa in this aspect has yielded important results and obtained positive evaluation from all circles in Africa.

Wang Yi noted that African countries have realized political independence but they should still strive for real independence in economy. From a long-term perspective, Africa should enhance its self-development capacity and establish its own industrial system. I had in-depth discussions with African countries on this. China will help Africa turn its rich natural resources into economic strength, and carry out production capacity cooperation with Africa by starting from collaboration in deep-processing of local resources to help establish its independent industrial system gradually. In this field, China has full capability and conditions to become the most ideal and reliable cooperative partner of Africa. The three countries expressed that expediting industrialization is the basic orientation and they welcome China to transfer production capacity needed by Africa.

Wang Yi said that the sixth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) will be held at the end of this year. For the last 15 years, with the joint efforts of China and Africa, the FOCAC has not only played an important role in developing the African continent but also driven the other major countries to put more investment in and pay more attention to Africa. This meeting may be upgraded to a summit. China will, together with Africa and in accordance with its needs, explore cooperation in such new fields as helping it speed up industrialization process, establish and improve public health system, and safeguard peace and stability, as well as deepen such traditional cooperation as trade, investment, education, science and technology. It is believed that this meeting will surely be a historic event featuring solidarity, cooperation, mutual benefit and win-win results between China and Africa.
